1994

The year the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was originally passed, reauthorized in 2005, 2013, and 2022. The goal to investigate & prosecute violent crimes against women, imposing automatic and mandatory restitution on those convicted, and allow for civil redress when prosecutors chose to not prosecute cases.

In 2019, an Ohio news station investigated domestic violence statistics, while reporting a DV crime. They discovered 60% of domestic violence cases were dismissed. Even more troubling, we found the percentage and total number of dismissed cases has continued to climb over the three-year time period we reviewed. In 2016, 54% of cases were dismissed. Just two years later, in 2018, 66% of cases were dismissed.

75% of Domestic Violence is unreported and of those reported they have a 70% dismissal rate.
